So the meaningful vote has happened, and the UK Government’s proposal that has taken two years to develop go a good kicking, the worst defeat for a UK Government ever!!!.
In a country that is now so divided Mrs May managed to do the impossible, she has managed to unite parliament in opposition to her plan, with hard line leavers and hard line remainers both voting for against it. So where does that leave us? When in doubt the answer lies in the bookies (who are rarely wrong), what odds are they offering on the various outcomes?
So what is going to happen? Well the bookies favourite is not before 2022 (9/4), which is after the proposed transition period, closely followed by March 2019 (11/4), however that is the same odds of the UK staying in the EU after another referendum (11/4). My reading of this that the bookies believe it is very close, but some sort of deal and transition period is just favorite.
One thing that is sure is that there are more twists and turns to come, with the ramifications of the final outcome to be felt for years to come. My hope is that party politics get put to one side and that those who are elected to serve us start doing that by getting a solution that works for all parts of society. I think we have recently seen the worst of democracy within the UK, although other countries are currently also making a ‘bit of a cock of it as well’.
